Korean bantamweight prospect You Min Shin (26, Pohang Team MAD) has been officially removed from the Road to UFC Season 5 Bantamweight Tournament after suffering a knee injury.
Shin, the reigning Ring Championship Bantamweight Champion, was originally scheduled to face Japan’s Ryuho in the quarterfinals. His matchup was one of the most anticipated Korean appearances of the season, with many analysts viewing him as a legitimate contender to win the entire bracket.
However, the injury forced him to withdraw just weeks before the opening round. In Shin’s place, the UFC has announced that Chung Leng Koren (India) will now face Ryuho.
Road to UFC is the UFC’s premier Asian talent‑development tournament. Fighters from across Asia compete in a season‑long bracket, with the winner of each weight class earning a UFC contract. Each season includes four weight classes and the winners receive a full UFC contract, serving as the most direct pathway for Asian fighters to enter the UFC.
Recent Korean alumni of Road to UFC includes Jeong Yeong Lee, Seung Guk Choi and Hyun Sung Park. This makes Shin’s withdrawal a big setback for Korea’s bantamweight pipeline. Many Korean fans viewed him as one of the country’s best chances to secure a UFC contract this year. His absence leaves Korea with fewer representatives in a season stacked with Japanese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian prospects.
You Min Shin’s withdrawal from Road to UFC Season 5 is a tough blow for Korean MMA, but his talent and trajectory remain intact. As the tournament kicks off in Macau, Korean fans will be watching closely — and hoping Shin returns healthy for another run at UFC contention.
The quarterfinals for Road to UFC Season 5 will take place May 28–29 (6pm China Standard time / 4am CST / 5am EST) in Macau, marking the tournament’s return to China after a successful run in Shanghai last season. Fans can watch Road to UFC Season 5 on UFC Fight Pass.
