KYU KIM

ROLE

FOUNDER & CEO, CHIEF.

BASED

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA

INTERVIEW

SEPTEMBER 2026

From the mats of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the streets of SoHo, CHIEF, is building something different. We sat down with founder Kyu Kim to talk about design, discipline, launching in America, and why this is only the beginning.

01 / THE BEGINNING

Origin

01. Before CHIEF., what was your own background, and what ultimately led you to create the brand in 2023?

I grew up between different cultures and countries having lived across four different continents, being a Korean born in Brazil and growing up in Portugal, Washington D.C., Peru, Korea, France and New York, which deeply shaped my identity and perspective. Before CHIEF., I utilized that experience professionally in the international education management sector, until COVID heavily impacted the industry and that’s when Jiu Jitsu became a lifeline that gave me a sense of focus, discipline and a community that grounded me. And just when the grappling scene began coming back to life after COVID, I noticed a gap between the quality of the sport and the way Jiu Jitsu apparel was being presented. The market was saturated with loud, complex designs and I wanted to create something that felt more elevated, minimal and intentional to cater to a wider audience and lower the barrier for entry for the sport to grow even further. That idea became CHIEF. in 2023, a brand built on performance with clean designs that reflected the class of the sport and help grow the sport by setting a higher standard for future generations.

02. CHIEF. began with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. What did you see in the BJJ and performance-apparel market that made you believe there was room for something different?

What stood out to us was that while the sport itself had evolved tremendously, much of the apparel market remained very niche in its design and aesthetic. From the very beginning, we also had the intention of growing beyond Jiu Jitsu and into different areas of performance and lifestyle. I think that idea stemmed from my global upbringing and understanding of how big the world is and what people from different cultures and backgrounds would gravitate toward. Also having played in multiple different sports and understanding those landscapes really helped see that vision as well. Coupled with a passion for branding, creativity, and design, we knew we could create a brand that could resonate with people regardless of background.

03. CHIEF. stands for “Chief Great Taste Officer.” Where did that idea come from, and what does “great taste” mean to you as the founder?

We always believed we could bring a unique perspective and a high level of taste to fashion and lifestyle, so we wanted the name to reflect that. “Chief Great Taste Officer” felt right because the words are simple and approachable, much like our designs, but at the same time, the name has a little personality to it. We wanted people to hear it and either chuckle or ask ‘what was that again?’—it was designed to capture attention and spark curiosity. But beyond the name itself, “great taste” became the philosophy behind CHIEF. To me, it means having an appreciation for quality, design, culture, and the details that make something feel right. It also gives us the freedom to extend beyond sport and into areas where we believe we can add value, like our Great Taste Coffee brand—premium coffee made convenient through brew bags. And ultimately, CHIEF. is the shortened form of Chief Great Taste Officer because we want everyone associated with the brand to feel like a CHIEF. themselves—to have the confidence to define and represent their own great taste.

I wanted to create something that felt more elevated, minimal and intentional to cater to a wider audience and lower the barrier for entry for the sport to grow even further.

THE BRAND

04. Combat-sports apparel has traditionally leaned toward loud graphics and aggressive branding, while CHIEF. feels much more understated and design conscious. Was that contrast intentional from the beginning?

Absolutely. The contrast was intentional from the beginning, and it goes back to our bigger vision of helping grow the sport before eventually branching into different areas of performance and lifestyle. We wanted to lower the barrier to entry and make Jiu Jitsu feel more approachable, particularly for people who may not traditionally see themselves represented in combat sports, including working professionals. In a sport like grappling, where everyone starts as a beginner and earning your skill takes years of dedication, we felt that overly loud or aggressive designs could sometimes create an unnecessary barrier for someone walking into a gym for the first time. Our approach was to create something more understated, elevated, and approachable—designs that people could feel comfortable wearing both inside and outside the gym. Ultimately, it was about using design as a way to bring more people from different backgrounds into the sport and create a stronger, more inclusive community.

05. The BJJ and performance-apparel markets are increasingly crowded. What fundamentally separates CHIEF. from other brands in the space?

What fundamentally separates CHIEF. is our commitment to building for the long term rather than chasing short-term trends. We place the customer journey and overall experience at the center of everything we do. We’re not simply an apparel brand in the activewear space—we’re building a broader lifestyle ecosystem, from performance apparel to our coffee brand and the events we host around the world, with each element connected through the same philosophy of great taste. At the core, we develop our products from the ground up with an intentional approach to design, functionality, and quality. We’re not interested in simply putting our logo on another product; everything we create needs to provide genuine value and have a reason to exist. That approach may take more time and patience, but we believe that having clarity about where we want CHIEF. to be a decade from now makes short-term trends and fluctuations much less important. For us, the difference is having the conviction to stay true to that vision and letting the quality of the product and the experience speak for themselves.

06. CHIEF. puts a lot of emphasis on both technical performance and design. How do you create something that can satisfy a serious athlete but still feel like a product someone wants to wear because of how it looks and feels?

At the core, it comes down to fit engineering coupled with the human touch in our designs. We’re built by athletes, and we’re in training ourselves every day, so we understand that performing at the highest level means eliminating distractions. That starts with the fit—removing unnecessary gaps and excess material to minimize resistance and allow the body to move naturally. From there, we obsess over the details in our color combinations, proportions, and overall design language to create something that not only performs, but makes you feel confident wearing it. Every product starts with a blank canvas and goes through multiple iterations and adjustments to find that balance between performance and aesthetics. There’s an element of human intuition in that process that can’t simply be replicated by AI—you have to understand what people want to feel when they put something on: proud, confident, and ready to perform. Ultimately, we believe that when you look good and feel good, you perform better.

07. CHIEF. has developed its own CreamAIR™ performance fabric. Why was developing proprietary material important to you rather than simply sourcing existing performance fabrics?

To be perfectly transparent, we initially had no choice. When we developed the concept for CHIEF. and began sourcing fabrics, we couldn’t find a supplier in the region that could deliver the specific blend and performance characteristics we were looking for. Rather than taking those numerous “no’s” as rejection, we saw them as an opportunity to create something that didn’t already exist. Quality was always non-negotiable for us, so we were willing to go wherever necessary to find the right materials, which ultimately led us to Italy. After a long and sometimes painful development process, we created CreamAIR™—a fabric that combines lightweight comfort, a smooth hand feel, breathability, quick-drying performance, and durability without compromising mobility. For us, it represents the level of performance and quality we believe CHIEF. should stand for.

08. How much of CHIEF.’s aesthetic and philosophy is influenced by Korea, and do you ultimately see CHIEF. as a Korean brand going global or simply a global brand that happens to have been founded in Korea?

We’ve always approached CHIEF. with a global mindset, and while we happened to be founded in Korea, we see ourselves ultimately as a global brand. That said, Korea has had a significant influence on our philosophy, particularly when it comes to standards and quality. There’s very little room to be halfway sufficient in Korea—people have high expectations and pay close attention to the finer details. But we welcome that challenge because it pushes us to continuously evolve, refine what we do, and never become complacent. So while Korea is part of our DNA, CHIEF. was never created to be confined to one market or culture. Our goal has always been to take those standards and bring them to a global audience.

03 / BEYOND THE MATS

BEYOND BJJ

09. CHIEF. started with BJJ but has expanded into MMA, Muay Thai, running, HYROX, CrossFit, strength training and other sports. Was becoming a broader performance brand always part of the vision?

It was always part of the plan because we believed great design should never stay idle in a small pond. BJJ was our starting point and our proving ground, but we always envisioned CHIEF. growing into a broader performance and lifestyle brand. In retrospect, starting with BJJ was a blessing in disguise. It’s an incredibly demanding sport that puts apparel through constant friction, movement, and intensity, so it gave us a strong foundation for developing products that could meet the demands of other sports. Today, we’re grateful to see CHIEF. being embraced by athletes and communities well beyond BJJ, and that’s something we’re excited to continue building on.

10. You’ve even expanded into Great Taste Coffee. Is the long-term vision for CHIEF. bigger than apparel — are you ultimately trying to build a lifestyle and culture brand?

Absolutely. Our imagination is limitless, and we’ve always envisioned CHIEF. as something bigger than apparel. Apparel is where we started, but the long-term vision is to build a lifestyle and culture brand that represents a certain way of thinking, living, and experiencing the world. That’s what led us into areas like Great Taste Coffee, and we’re not necessarily limiting ourselves to any particular category. In many of our campaigns, we use extraplanetary concepts to visualize the idea that our creativity has no boundaries. Even our Luxe Edition was inspired by the idea of a spacesuit. So who knows—maybe one day we’ll be collaborating with SpaceX to design the spacesuits that take humans to Mars.

04 / U.S. Expansion

AMERICA

11. CHIEF. recently introduced itself to the U.S. through the July 17–19 Soho event in New York. Why was New York the right place for that introduction?

New York felt like the right place because it has always represented a city where people from all over the world come together, and Soho in particular is one of the most influential fashion destinations in the world. From the beginning, introducing CHIEF. to the U.S. was part of our long-term vision, and New York was naturally at the top of that list. It made the moment even more special because I went to university there as a young adult, and that period of my life had a tremendous influence on the direction of our brand. To see that vision come full circle was an absolute dream come true. From a college kid that at one point had to ask strangers for a dollar to take the bus back to Jersey from Port Authority to years later, to return to New York with my own brand, reconnect with friends from that chapter of my life, and introduce CHIEF. in Soho felt incredibly meaningful. It felt like everything came together through genuine intentions, persistence, and hard work.

12. What did you learn from the Soho launch and the reaction from American consumers? Was there anything that surprised you?

It taught us that if our products could resonate in a market as competitive and discerning as New York, there was a strong possibility that they could resonate globally. As beautiful and influential as New York is, it can also be notoriously difficult to break into because the standards are incredibly high and consumers are exposed to some of the best brands in the world. What surprised us most was how naturally people outside of the Jiu Jitsu community connected with CHIEF. We saw firsthand that the brand’s aesthetic and philosophy could transcend the sport, which reinforced our belief that we’re building something much bigger than a Jiu Jitsu brand.

13. CHIEF. is now preparing to officially launch in the United States through both online sales and physical retail. Why is now the right time to make that commitment to the American market?

With our recent SoHo launch in New York, we felt the timing was right to build on the momentum we’ve created and make a more intentional commitment to the U.S. market. You can never overlook momentum as a business, and the response we received in New York reinforced our belief that there is a genuine audience for CHIEF. in the U.S. Fortunately, we already have quality partners and relationships established in the market, which gives us a strong foundation to build from rather than starting from scratch. Ultimately, we want to make CHIEF. more accessible to our American customers through both online and physical retail, while establishing the U.S. as an important part of our next stage of growth.

14. The U.S. is one of the world’s most competitive sportswear markets. How do you plan to introduce CHIEF. to consumers who have never heard of the brand and establish an identity alongside both major sportswear companies and established combat-sports brands?

Our approach is ultimately about making quality performance apparel more accessible while building a brand identity that people genuinely want to be part of. We don’t intend to compete with the major sportswear companies by trying to outspend them or out scale them; instead, we want to differentiate through our product, design, and the culture we build around CHIEF. The U.S. is the biggest and one of the most competitive markets in the world, but we see that as an opportunity rather than a barrier. If we can help more people train better, feel better, and look better while doing it, then we’re adding something positive to the world. Our belief is that if we consistently deliver on that promise, build authentic relationships within the communities we serve, and let the product speak for itself, it’s only a matter of time before the world catches on.

THE FOUNDER & FUTURE

15. Building CHIEF. from Korea and now taking it internationally hasn’t happened overnight. What has been the hardest part of building the company that customers probably never see?

People mostly only see the production of the physical product, but what often gets overlooked is the amount of energy, time, and manpower we put into our designs. The simplest designs are often the hardest to create. Everything from the font, logo placement and color combinations to the smallest details is intentional. We’ve had numerous designs that received the final green light for production, only for us to pull them back at the last minute because there was that 2% of the design that we simply didn’t feel good about. Sometimes we completely turn it around with a different design, and then we see those changes take off when the product is finally released. We care deeply—almost obsessively—about getting every detail right, and I think that has been one of the hardest parts of building CHIEF.: the amount of time and thought we’re willing to put into something that, on the surface, may look very simple.

16. If we sit down again three years from now, what would need to have happened for you to say that CHIEF. became the company you originally envisioned?

Three years from now, I hope CHIEF. has transcended the performance-apparel category. We wouldn’t simply be known for clothing or even for coffee as an external brand; we’d be much more diverse in our offerings, entering categories that people may never have imagined CHIEF. being in. One of the most fortunate aspects of our community is the constant feedback and suggestions we receive about products, services, and experiences they want to see from us—many of which we never initially saw potential in ourselves. That tells us something about the versatility and trust our brand has built. If, three years from now, people can see CHIEF. as a brand that can authentically exist across multiple categories while continuing to elevate the level of taste, quality, and identity, then I’d say we’ve become the company we originally envisioned.

If we can help more people train better, feel better, and look better while doing it, then we’re adding something positive to the world.
