After more than a decade competing on MMA’s biggest stage, former UFC bantamweight Kyung Ho Kang is entertaining the idea of fighting again. The surprising part? Instead of chasing another major promotion, Kang joked about starting over from the very bottom of Korea’s amateur scene.
Kyung Ho Kang may not be finished fighting just yet.
The longtime UFC veteran recently opened up about life after his UFC run, his responsibilities as a coach and gym owner, and whether there is anything that could convince him to step back into competition.
What started as a lighthearted conversation between Team MAD teammates eventually produced an intriguing possibility: Kang wants something that can make his heart race again.
And apparently, that could mean starting all over.
Rather than immediately pursuing another high-level professional fight, Kang and his teammates floated the unusual idea of the former UFC fighter entering Korea’s KMMA system and attempting to work his way up from the novice ranks.
The conversation was filled with jokes, and there is no confirmed fight yet.
But beneath the humor was something considerably more interesting.
Kang still appears to have the itch to compete.
LIFE AFTER THE UFC LOOKS VERY DIFFERENT
Kang’s daily life today bears little resemblance to that of a fighter solely concerned with his own training camp.
Now a coach and gym owner, much of his time revolves around his students.
Kang described waking around 9 a.m. and heading to his academy for morning classes. After returning home in the afternoon to eat and briefly rest, he’s back at the gym for evening sessions.
Those sessions can continue through the competition team’s training until around 10:30 p.m. By the time Kang gets home and eventually falls asleep, it can be around 2 or 3 in the morning.
Then he wakes up and does it again.
His teammates said that since opening the academy, Kang has essentially never missed teaching his classes. They even joked that his sense of responsibility might be excessive, claiming he sometimes turns down outside opportunities if they interfere with his schedule at the gym.
That responsibility toward his students is also part of what appears to be pulling Kang toward competition again.
He doesn’t simply want to tell his fighters what competing requires.
He wants to show them.
STARTING FROM THE BOTTOM?
That’s where the conversation took an unexpected turn.
Kang’s teammates dramatically introduced some “big news” about his return before joking that the former UFC veteran would be making his comeback in KMMA.
Not as a featured professional attraction.
As a novice.
The idea quickly became a running joke: Kang would begin at the bottom, collect the required novice victories, advance through the amateur level and eventually work his way toward semi-pro competition.
In other words, a fighter who spent years competing against some of the best bantamweights in the world would effectively hit the reset button.
“From the bottom,” Kang and his teammates joked while discussing the idea.
Obviously, there are practical problems with putting an experienced UFC veteran into a genuine novice division.
The group acknowledges that themselves later in the conversation, joking about how Kang could possibly enter before conceding that his existing professional record makes the situation complicated.
They eventually suggest speaking with KMMA officials to see whether some form of appearance or matchup could actually be arranged.
So no, Kyung Ho Kang has not officially announced that he’s fighting an MMA novice.
But the joke reveals something more important.
He’s thinking about competing again.
“MAKE MY HEART BEAT AGAIN”
The most revealing moment comes when Kang talks about wanting something capable of reigniting the feeling he once had as an active fighter.
“I want something to make my heart beat again,” Kang said during the conversation.
His teammates repeatedly connect a possible return to the example Kang wants to set for his students.
For a veteran who has already fought at the highest level, the motivation no longer appears to be simply proving that he belongs.
Kang has already done that.
The question now is whether competition can still give him something that coaching cannot.
And KMMA isn’t the only name that comes up.
WHAT ABOUT BLACK COMBAT?
The conversation eventually turns toward where fans would actually like to see Kang fight.
Black Combat is specifically mentioned.
With the Korean promotion continuing to attract attention domestically, Kang’s name naturally creates an interesting possibility.
But anyone hoping the video contained a secret Black Combat announcement will have to wait.
Kang says he hasn’t received an offer.
When told that fans would like to see him compete there, Kang jokes that nobody from the promotion has contacted him or sent him a message asking him to fight.
The group then encourages fans to make their interest known.
For now, Black Combat remains nothing more than a hypothetical destination but they have been picking up legends such as Choo Sung Hoon and Myung Ho Bae in their roster recently.
Still, the fact that the subject is being openly discussed adds another wrinkle to Kang’s future.
A VERY DIFFERENT KIND OF COMEBACK
Kang’s career makes the idea of starting again particularly amusing.
This isn’t an inexperienced fighter trying to figure out whether he belongs in MMA.
It’s a veteran who spent years fighting internationally and reached the UFC, only to now find himself on the other side of the sport—running a gym, raising a family and helping younger fighters pursue the same path he once traveled.
That’s what makes the KMMA discussion more interesting than the joke itself.
Kang doesn’t need to work his way through novice MMA to prove anything.
If he actually returns, starting from the bottom would instead be symbolic of what his role in the sport has become.
He wants his students to see the process.
He wants to lead by example.
And perhaps most importantly, he appears to want to feel like a fighter again.
Toward the end of the video, the group returns to the KMMA idea and jokes about finding someone willing to accept the assignment.
Their sales pitch is simple: even if you lose, how many amateur fighters could say they got the opportunity to fight Kyung Ho Kang?
Whether anyone ever gets that opportunity remains to be seen.
There is no confirmed comeback fight, no confirmed KMMA booking and no Black Combat deal.
But after years spent fighting under the UFC banner, Kang isn’t talking like someone who has completely closed the door on competition.
He just needs something that makes his heart beat again.
And if that means going back to the beginning, the former UFC veteran seems surprisingly open to the idea.
