Young Jae Song Isn’t Ready to Walk Away After ROAD TO UFC Defeat

After his second ROAD TO UFC defeat, Young Jae Song found himself questioning whether it was time to walk away from MMA.

Young Jae Song Whats Next

After his second ROAD TO UFC attempt ended in disappointment, Young Jae Song admits he questioned whether it was time to stop fighting. Now, he has decided there is still more left in his MMA journey.

For the first time, Young Jae Song seriously wondered if it was time to walk away.

The Korean featherweight recently opened up about the emotional aftermath of his ROAD TO UFC defeat, revealing that the loss left him questioning not only his UFC dream, but his future as a fighter altogether.

It wasn’t an easy conversation.

This was Song’s second attempt at ROAD TO UFC. And when another opportunity to move closer to the UFC ended in disappointment, the questions became harder to ignore.

Should he keep going?

Or was it finally time to stop?

Song now has his answer.

He’s not done yet.

Back With His Team

Despite his own fight having ended only recently, Song traveled to Vietnam with HAVAS MMA to help his teammates as a cornerman.

His coach made a point of thanking him for returning so quickly and putting his own disappointment aside to support the team.

But eventually, the conversation turned back toward Song’s fight.

His coach admitted the result was particularly frustrating because they had prepared for the situation that ultimately caused Song problems.

Early in the fight, things appeared to be going well.

Song landed his lead hand almost immediately, and both fighter and corner felt there could be opportunities to control the fight through the striking exchanges.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

Song knew his opponent could attack the way he did. But when the moment arrived, Song admitted his reaction may have been too slow.

His coach had a slightly different interpretation.

He felt Song momentarily lost his concentration.

There were no elaborate excuses afterward.

They made a mistake.

They lost.

And now they have to live with it.

A Loss That Felt Different

Song has dealt with setbacks before.

This one was different.

His coach revealed that following the fight, Song told him for the first time that he was beginning to question his future in MMA.

For Song, the disappointment was magnified by what the opportunity represented.

This was already his second ROAD TO UFC attempt.

And after another defeat, he began asking himself a difficult question:

If the UFC isn’t going to happen, do I still want to do this?

“At first, I didn’t really feel like continuing if it wasn’t going to be the UFC,” Song admitted.

The thought of quitting followed.

“I thought a lot about whether I should just stop.”

For a fighter who has spent years chasing one destination, it’s an understandable question.

ROAD TO UFC offers Asian prospects one of the clearest routes toward the UFC. Making it there can change a career.

Falling short can force a fighter to reconsider everything that came before it—and everything required to try again.

Young Jae Song Chooses to Continue

Song didn’t make an immediate decision.

He spoke with people around him and spent time seriously thinking about what he wanted.

Eventually, one feeling became stronger than the disappointment.

Regret.

Song realized that if he stopped now, there was still too much he would wonder about afterward.

“It’s still too disappointing to quit now,” Song said. “I think I would have a lot of regrets.”

And his perspective on his career began to change.

The UFC may still be the dream, but it doesn’t have to be the only reason he fights.

“Even if it’s not the UFC, I want to take on another challenge in my fighting career,” he said. “So I’m going to try again.”

That may be the most important realization to come out of the loss.

Song isn’t announcing some guaranteed comeback story.

He isn’t promising that another UFC opportunity will arrive.

He’s simply deciding that one failed opportunity isn’t going to decide when his career ends.

His Team Still Believes

There are people around Song who aren’t ready to give up on him either.

Earlier in the episode, an AFC representative discussed just how difficult the ROAD TO UFC defeat had been for Song, saying he had struggled enough afterward to question the direction of his career.

But he also made something else clear:

He expected Song to come back.

Song responded by saying he would continue working toward the UFC, while those around him pointed toward his age and fighting style as reasons there could still be another opportunity ahead.

His coach’s message was similarly supportive.

Having experienced the fighter’s life himself, he understands that professional MMA isn’t difficult only because of the training, injuries and financial sacrifices.

There is also the public side.

When fighters win, the support can feel overwhelming.

When they lose, the criticism can arrive just as quickly.

For athletes already dealing with the disappointment of defeat, that attention can make the mental recovery even harder.

That’s why Song’s decision to return means something to his coach.

He described Song as someone who has sacrificed financially to focus on training and thanked him for continuing to trust the team despite how difficult the journey has become.

If Song is prepared to continue, his team appears prepared to continue with him.

“As Far as I Can”

There is no new UFC contract waiting at the end of this story.

There isn’t another ROAD TO UFC opportunity confirmed.

And Song himself doesn’t know exactly where the next chapter will take him.

What he knows is that he isn’t ready for this to be the end.

His second ROAD TO UFC defeat forced him to confront something fighters rarely speak about openly: what happens when the dream you’ve built your career around suddenly feels farther away than ever?

For a moment, Young Jae Song thought the answer might be to stop.

Instead, he has chosen to find another reason to continue.

Maybe another opportunity eventually leads him back toward the UFC.

Maybe his career takes him somewhere completely different.

For now, Song isn’t trying to predict it.

He’s just willing to keep fighting.

“I’ll keep going as far as I can.”
