Justin Gaethje Details His Current Injuries
Gaethje fought twice in 2026 and said the toll of those bouts has caught up with him. He described a deep bone bruise in his knee and continued issues with his hand that prevent him from throwing full power punches.
I’ve fought twice this year, I have deep bone bruise in my knee, I can’t punch with my hand still so I really need to recover and I know for a fact I won’t fight again this year – Gaethje said.
He added that his statistical output this year has been the best of his career, calling the level of performance unlikely given the physical toll he described.
Family Plays a Role in the Decision
Justin Gaethje explained that any decision about walking away from the sport will not be made alone. He said his parents, siblings, and coaches all have a standing agreement to speak with him once the topic becomes serious.
I have a family, I’ve always trusted and told my parents, my brothers, my sister, my coaches, that I need them to have a conversation with me whenever the time needs to come – he said.
He also framed the choice in practical terms, comparing his career to a business decision rather than a purely emotional one. Justin Gaethje said he plans to evaluate what life looks like going forward before committing to anything.
No Opponent Locked In Yet
While recovery keeps Gaethje sidelined for the rest of the year, the UFC already has options lined up for whenever he returns. A rematch with Ilia Topuria remains on the table after Gaethje defeated him for the title at UFC Freedom 250. The winner of the upcoming fight between Arman Tsarukyan and Mauricio Ruffy is also in consideration as a potential next challenger.
Gaethje has previously voiced support for Tsarukyan earning a title opportunity based on merit, even as he acknowledged the promotion’s hesitation to fast track the matchup.
