For years, South Korean MMA has been represented by pioneers such as Dong Hyun Kim, Chan Sung Jung and, more recently, Hyun Sung Park. Seok Hyeon Ko belongs to the next wave of fighters determined to prove that Korean athletes can consistently compete with the best in the UFC.
His path has not relied on hype. Instead, it has been built through disciplined performances and constant improvement. After earning his UFC contract in 2024, Ko picked up decision victories over Oban Elliott and Phil Rowe, showcasing composure, cardio and a well-rounded skill set against experienced opponents.
Another victory over Lebosnoyani would continue that progress and could move him significantly closer to the UFC welterweight rankings.
A Fight Built on Confidence
Seok Hyeon Ko respects the level of competition inside the UFC, but he enters this matchup with growing confidence.
“There are no easy opponents in the UFC because everyone prepares well. I believe I will have a clear advantage in wrestling, and I have also spent a lot of time improving my striking.”
Although Ko is a former Sambo world champion and has leaned on his grappling during previous UFC appearances, he insists he still views himself as a striker.
His goal is to blend both disciplines rather than rely on one area.
“If he wants to wrestle, I will dominate him there as well and finish with strong ground and pound.”
Those comments reflect the confidence of a fighter who believes his game has reached another level following months of uninterrupted training.
Seok Hyeon Ko – Turning Setbacks Into Strength
This appearance comes after an unexpected delay. Seok Hyeon Ko had originally been scheduled to return in February against Jacobe Smith before suffering a rib injury that forced him to withdraw. Instead of rushing back, the Korean contender focused on recovery and used the additional months to sharpen every aspect of his game.
He admitted the delay was frustrating but believes it ultimately made him a better fighter.
“I’ve completely recovered and I don’t have any significant pain anymore. I feel sorry that the fans had to wait, but I used this time to become stronger.”
That patience could pay off when he steps inside the Octagon again.
A Wedding Just Weeks Away
Seok Hyeon Ko’s fight camp has included another major milestone outside the cage.
Just three weeks after competing in Oklahoma City, he will marry his fiancée. Balancing a UFC training camp with wedding preparations could have distracted many athletes, but Ko credits his partner for making the process easier.
According to Ko, she insisted he should accept the fight regardless of the inconvenience. He even joked that any bruises suffered during the contest would disappear under wedding makeup.
His longtime mentor Dong Hyun Kim offered simpler advice.
“Forget about the wedding and focus on the fight.”
That guidance appears to have helped Ko maintain his attention on the task ahead.
Valuable Lessons From International Training
Seok Hyeon Ko also expanded his preparation by spending time training in Ireland, where he shared the gym with several high-profile names, including Conor McGregor and former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.
While he admitted the sessions were not long enough to dramatically influence his technical development, the experience gave him valuable insight into how elite fighters approach the sport.
He also spoke about McGregor’s popularity after watching the Irish superstar interact with supporters during dinner, calling it an example of the global reach that comes with success inside the UFC.
Ko later predicted that Max Holloway could have the advantage over McGregor because of the Irishman’s lengthy absence from competition.
A Chance to Raise South Korea’s Profile
Lebosnoyani enters the bout with an impressive 10-2 professional record and an aggressive grappling style rooted in jiu-jitsu. The American has finished eight of his 10 victories, making him a dangerous opponent for anyone in the division.
Even so, Seok Hyeon Ko believes this matchup offers the perfect opportunity to showcase the complete version of his game.
A convincing victory would not only extend his winning streak but also reinforce Korea’s growing influence in the UFC. With experienced veterans passing the torch to a new generation, Seok Hyeon Ko has the opportunity to become one of the country’s leading names in mixed martial arts.
