The Brazilian bantamweight Raoni Barcelos is conscious, walking and talking after a frightening fifth-round incident against Raul Rosas Jr., with his doctor saying he remains hospitalized as a precaution.
Raoni Barcelos remains under medical observation following the frightening conclusion to his UFC Vegas 121 main event against Raul Rosas Jr., but the latest updates surrounding the Brazilian veteran have been encouraging.
Barcelos was transported to a Level 1 trauma center in Las Vegas after losing consciousness during the fifth round of Saturday night’s bantamweight main event. The unusual sequence immediately shifted attention away from the result of the fight and toward the condition of the 39-year-old.
The UFC later confirmed that Barcelos underwent a CT scan and comprehensive medical assessment and was “stable, alert and responsive, with full movement.”
His head coach, Davi Ramos, subsequently provided another encouraging update, saying Barcelos had regained his senses and was conscious and communicating while undergoing further examinations.
“Raoni is doing well,” Ramos said in Portuguese. “He has all his senses, he’s moving his leg, his arm, his hand, he’s conscious, he’s talking, everything is fine with him.”
Ramos asked supporters to continue sending positive messages and prayers while Barcelos completed the necessary medical testing.
Further details were provided by Barcelos’ doctor, Dr. Gustavo Medeiros, who described what occurred during the fight as a “sudden illness” but said Barcelos was lucid and oriented.
According to Medeiros, Barcelos remains hospitalized primarily as a precaution and is expected to stay under observation for several days to ensure his condition remains stable.
“He is lucid and oriented at this moment, and he is hospitalized strictly as a matter of protocol,” Medeiros said.
Additional reporting indicated that Raoni Barcelos is able to walk, talk and eat while remaining conscious and lucid. As of the latest updates, however, no definitive explanation for what caused the episode during the fight has been publicly announced.
A Frightening End to a Brilliant Performance
The medical emergency brought an abrupt and unsettling conclusion to what had otherwise been an impressive performance from Barcelos.
Facing Rosas Jr. in his first UFC main event, Barcelos entered the fifth round ahead on all three judges’ scorecards. One judge had even awarded him a 10-8 fourth round.
A victory would have extended Barcelos’ UFC winning streak to six.
Instead, the fight suddenly changed during a grappling exchange along the cage.
After Rosas Jr. brought Barcelos to the canvas, it became apparent that something was wrong. Barcelos appeared unresponsive, prompting the fight to be stopped at 1:38 of the fifth round.
Medical personnel immediately entered the Octagon to attend to him before Barcelos was eventually removed from the arena on a stretcher and transported to the hospital.
The UFC officially recorded the result as a fifth-round victory for Rosas Jr., but there was little celebration following the stoppage.
Rosas Jr. Sends Support
Rosas Jr. immediately showed concern for his opponent following the fight and asked those watching to pray for Barcelos.
The 21-year-old later continued to show support for his opponent on social media, writing, “Prayers to my opponent,” while reflecting on the battle the two bantamweights had shared.
Despite the frightening ending, their performance was recognized with Fight of the Night honors.
For Ramos, the result was secondary to what Barcelos had demonstrated throughout the fight.
“We practice a sport that we can’t predict, unfortunately, but we know for sure that we were doing our best,” Ramos said.
He praised Barcelos as a “warrior” and highlighted the technique, skill and heart his fighter displayed throughout the main event.

For now, questions surrounding Raoni Barcelos’ fighting future take a back seat to his health.
