PFL Tampa Results: Cris Cyborg Beats Ketlen Vieira for Historic 30th Win

Cris Cyborg has given herself more time to consider her MMA future after defeating Ketlen Vieira in a closely contested main event at PFL Tampa.

Cyborg earned a unanimous decision victory over Vieira to retain the PFL Women’s Featherweight Championship and improve her professional MMA record to 30 and 2. The victory also marked the 30th win of her career, a milestone she had specifically targeted heading into the contest.

The result was far less straightforward than many expected. Vieira missed the featherweight limit by seven pounds, but Cyborg accepted the fight and put her championship on the line. After five competitive rounds, the judges awarded Cyborg the contest by scores of 49 to 46, 48 to 47 and 49 to 46.

Cris Cyborg reaches 30 career wins

The biggest achievement from PFL Tampa was Cyborg reaching 30 professional MMA victories.

The Brazilian entered the contest with a 29 and 2 record and had previously suggested that the fight could be the final MMA appearance of her career. She had planned to compete once more in MMA before pursuing a major boxing opportunity and eventually retiring. Instead, her performance against Vieira has opened the door to another fight.

Cyborg acknowledged the difficulty of the contest after the victory but made it clear that she remains interested in competing if the right opportunity arrives.

“This was a big test for me,” Cyborg said after the fight.

She then added, “Now, I’m a free agent. I’m excited. Eight years undefeated. I’m ready for anybody. Any time, any weight.”

Those comments represent a significant change from the retirement narrative surrounding the fight.

Vieira makes Cyborg work for the decision

Vieira entered the contest as the heavier fighter after missing weight by seven pounds. Because of the weight miss, the Brazilian could not claim the PFL featherweight title, but Cyborg still agreed to proceed with the championship fight.

The size difference became an important factor throughout the contest.

Cyborg focused heavily on attacking the body while Vieira used her boxing to create problems for the champion. The fight lasted the full 25 minutes, with both women having periods of success.

Cyborg ultimately produced enough significant offense to convince all three judges that she had done enough to win. The narrowest scorecard was 48 to 47, reflecting how competitive the five round contest became.

For Cyborg, the victory was particularly important because it came at a stage of her career when retirement had appeared increasingly likely.

Cyborg calls out Claressa Shields

After securing her 30th MMA victory, Cyborg immediately turned her attention toward another major challenge.

She called out Claressa Shields, the undefeated boxing champion who has been linked with a potential crossover fight against the Brazilian.

Cyborg has previously claimed that she offered Shields $2 million for a fight. After her victory over Vieira, she once again challenged Shields and suggested a bout at 160 pounds.

“You’re scared to fight me,” Cyborg said. “This girl [Vieira] has more heart than you.”

She then proposed a 160 pound contest and pointed to the difference in their professional boxing experience. Cyborg has eight professional boxing fights, while Shields has built a far more extensive career in the sport.

Shields has also responded to Cyborg in the past, including posting a comment on X after footage from the Vieira fight circulated. That leaves the possibility of a high profile boxing contest between the two still open.

Kayla Harrison is another option

Cyborg also addressed UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Kayla Harrison after her PFL Tampa victory.

Harrison previously competed in the PFL before leaving the promotion for the UFC. A potential fight between Harrison and Cyborg had been discussed during Harrison’s time with the organization but never materialized.

Cyborg now appears willing to revisit that possibility.

“I’m ready for you,” she told Harrison before suggesting that the UFC champion could first pursue a fight with Amanda Nunes.

A return to the UFC would represent a major development given Cyborg’s history with the promotion. She lost the UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship to Nunes in December 2018 before leaving the company following a victory over Felicia Spencer at UFC 240.

What comes next for Cris Cyborg?

Cyborg is now a free agent, which gives her several potential options.

She could remain in MMA and continue defending her legacy in the PFL, explore a crossover boxing fight with Shields or consider other opportunities outside the organization.

The recent merger between the PFL and Most Valuable Promotions could also create more possibilities. PFL CEO John Martin has indicated that the new structure could allow fighters to compete across MMA and boxing, potentially making a Cyborg boxing appearance easier to arrange.

There has also been discussion of a potential boxing matchup between Cyborg and Olympic taekwondo champion Jade Jones, with Misfits Boxing reportedly considering a fight later this year.

Cyborg entered PFL Tampa with the possibility of walking away after one final MMA fight. She left with her championship, her 30th professional victory and a list of potential opponents.

At 41 years old, the Brazilian legend has not made a final decision about what comes next. But after her victory over Vieira, it appears that retirement can wait.
