The ROAD FC CEO Moon Hong Jung believes Yang Ji Yong may have the sharper striking, but Kim Hyun Woo’s wrestling, pressure, and endurance could completely change the rematch.
ROAD FC CEO Moon Hong Jung offered an in-depth breakdown of the upcoming rematch between Hyun Woo Kim and Ji Yong Yang while also revealing that he may attempt to secure an additional Asian Games opportunity for a South Korean MMA athlete.
The discussion took place during a relaxed meal featured on Moon Hong Jung’s YouTube channel, where Kim appeared alongside Team Finish teammate Dong Soo Seo. Although the episode opened with strength challenges, jokes, and plenty of food, the conversation eventually shifted toward Kim’s August 29 fight against Yang and what could be at stake beyond the ROAD FC cage.
Kim and Yang have already met once, with Yang securing a victory by guillotine choke. Kim admitted that the submission surprised him at the time, especially because he had not expected Yang to attack with that particular technique.
Looking back, however, Kim did not make excuses for the loss.
“I sometimes think about why I got caught in that,” Kim said during the conversation. “I think I was still lacking in a lot of areas.”
Moon and Seo both suggested that Kim had performed well for much of the previous fight before the sudden submission. Kim nevertheless acknowledged that being caught was part of the sport and reflected his level of preparation at the time.
That previous result now adds another layer of intrigue to the rematch.
Moon Hong Jung Analyzes the Stylistic Matchup
Rather than declaring himself to be on one fighter’s side, Moon explained that his prediction was based on stylistic compatibility.
Moon suggested that Yang may be the sharper and more dangerous fighter during traditional striking exchanges. Yang’s ability to finish the first fight with a guillotine also demonstrated that he is capable of capitalizing when an opponent makes a mistake during a transition.
Kim, however, may possess advantages in wrestling, takedowns, pressure, and prolonged exchanges.
“When looking at the grappling, I thought Hyun Woo Kim’s takedowns might be more effective,” Moon explained.
The larger question, according to Moon, is whether Kim can convert those takedowns into a decisive finishing position before Yang creates an opportunity on the feet.
Moon Hong Jung believes Yang may have the greater chance of producing a clean finish through conventional striking. However, if the contest reaches the later rounds and develops into a physical, grinding battle, Kim’s endurance and willingness to engage in difficult exchanges could become increasingly important.
“If it goes to a decision, I think Hyun Woo may have the advantage,” Moon said, pointing toward Kim’s ability to maintain pressure through the second and third rounds.
The ROAD FC CEO also highlighted the importance of transitions.
He explained that the fight may not be decided through a perfectly executed knockout combination or a clean submission setup. Instead, the decisive moment could occur when one fighter is switching between striking and grappling.
Kim could attempt a takedown, force Yang to defend, and then land punches while Yang is out of position. Yang could similarly use Kim’s aggression to create another submission opportunity.
According to Moon, the fighter who reacts more quickly and takes control during those transitional moments may ultimately win the rematch.
Hyun Woo Kim Promises Another Finish
Kim made it clear that he has no intention of approaching the contest conservatively.
He noted that his victories have largely come by knockout and said he plans to continue pursuing finishes. His confidence remains high despite the previous loss, and he believes he is capable of producing a different result on August 29.
Moon Hong Jung warned, however, that Kim’s desire to force a finish could become dangerous.
A fighter who enters the cage determined to score a knockout can become impatient, overextend, or abandon the strategy that created the opportunity in the first place. Moon encouraged Kim to allow the finish to develop through the work he has completed in training rather than chasing it recklessly.
Kim nevertheless emphasized that he is prepared to give everything inside the cage.
“I think I could die in that cage on August 29,” Kim said while describing the seriousness of his preparation. “That is how I am going to fight.”
Moon agreed that looking too far beyond the immediate matchup could prevent a fighter from performing at his best.
Asian Games Opportunity Discussed
The conversation later turned toward South Korea’s participation in Asian Games MMA competition.
Moon Hong Jung said he may speak with Asian MMA officials about securing an additional qualification place for South Korea in a weight category that does not currently have an available spot.
He explained that Korean athletes such as Eun Seok Choi and Bo Mi Lee earned their opportunities by competing internationally and collecting qualification points. Moon stressed that those athletes supported the development of Korea’s amateur MMA system by participating in the events required to qualify.
Any additional place, therefore, would not simply be an automatic position that had always belonged to South Korea.
Moon described it as a potential opportunity that he would personally need to request through his relationships with Asian MMA officials.
The limited timeline would also make a full domestic qualification tournament difficult. Organizing several rounds of fights could leave the eventual representative injured or unable to prepare properly for the Asian Games.
Moon argued that an athlete selected for any newly secured position should be someone with proven competitiveness who has also supported the Korean MMA federation and its international activities.
He also suggested that athletes and gyms that previously helped the federation should receive consideration before individuals who only became interested after an Asian Games opportunity appeared.
Kim was asked whether he would consider participating if a position became available in his division.
For now, he refused to look beyond Yang.
Kim said he did not want to think about anything scheduled after August 29 because all of his attention remains on the ROAD FC rematch. Moon respected that answer, noting that a fighter cannot afford to enter an important contest while already thinking about the next opportunity.
Hyun Woo Kim Chases His Place Among ROAD FC Champions
Kim closed the episode by speaking about his desire to join his successful friends as a ROAD FC champion.
He mentioned Si Won Park and Jeong Hyun Lee, both of whom have already reached championship status. Kim admitted that being the only one without a belt sometimes left him feeling like an outsider among the group.
That could change with a victory on August 29.
Kim believes the upcoming fight offers him the chance to finally stand alongside his longtime peers as a champion. Before considering the Asian Games or any other future opportunity, however, he must first overcome the opponent who handed him one of the most frustrating defeats of his career.
Moon Hong Jung may believe Yang possesses the sharper striking. He may also believe Kim has the wrestling and endurance to take control over a longer fight.
Ultimately, the ROAD FC CEO’s position is not based on favoritism.
It is based on which fighter can impose his strengths, survive the transitions, and avoid repeating the mistake that ended their first meeting.
