After becoming almost as famous for his absence as his fighting, “Korean Moai” Min Woo Kim is finally returning to Black Combat and his comeback will come against No. 4-ranked featherweight Rockstone.
Black Combat has spent months wondering when Min Woo Kim would actually fight again.
Apparently, so have the fans.
The former Road FC bantamweight champion made an unexpected appearance during Black Combat’s latest workshop, where the promotion finally gave the first look at his return and revealed the opponent waiting for him on August 29: Rockstone (Lucas Bento).
And Black Combat didn’t exactly let Moai quietly walk back into the room.
Black Combat’s “Legendary Pokémon” Finally Appears
Kim’s inactivity has become enough of a running joke that Black Combat has given him another unofficial nickname: the “Legendary Pokémon.”
You know he exists. You just don’t know when you’re actually going to see him.
Kim seemed well aware of the criticism.
He admitted that the reaction he receives from fans has changed considerably. Where the feedback once leaned heavily positive, he said it now feels almost completely reversed. Some of the messages have essentially told him that Black Combat doesn’t need him anymore and that he should concentrate on running his gym instead of fighting.
Kim didn’t really argue with them.
Instead, he acknowledged that he needs to start competing again.
“I know it’s my turn to step up now.”
For a fighter with a 12-2 professional record and the experience Kim possesses, simply remaining part of the Black Combat roster isn’t enough anymore.
He needs to fight.
And more importantly, he needs to remind people why “Korean Moai” mattered in the first place.
Rockstone Gets the Call
Black Combat saved the actual reveal for the workshop competition.
With the score tied, the final contest was announced as:
Moai vs Black.
CEO Black would essentially play the role of Kim’s upcoming opponent. Then came the question everyone was waiting for.
Who was Black supposed to be?
Rockstone.
Lucas Bento, better known to Black Combat fans as Rockstone, currently sits at No. 4 in the promotion’s featherweight rankings. Kim is immediately behind him at No. 5.
That makes this much more than a comeback showcase.
It’s No. 4 vs No. 5 in one of Black Combat’s deepest divisions.
Rockstone Wasn’t the Original Opponent
There’s another interesting wrinkle.
According to Black Combat, Kim was originally expected to face Wolf King (Adilet Nurmatov).
Wolf King currently holds the No. 3 position at featherweight and would have represented an immediate opportunity for Kim to jump directly toward the top of the division.
An injury forced Wolf King out, however, leaving Black Combat searching for another opponent.
The replacement was Rockstone.
On paper, that might actually create the cleaner storyline.
There isn’t much complicated matchmaking math required here.
Rockstone is No. 4.
Moai is No. 5.
If Min Woo Kim wants to show that he still belongs among Black Combat’s elite featherweights, the man immediately ahead of him is standing across the cage.
Moai Doesn’t Want an Easy Comeback
One thing became clear during the conversation surrounding his return: Kim isn’t particularly interested in spending this stage of his career fighting domestic opponents simply for the sake of staying active.
When the possibility of facing other Korean featherweights came up, Kim reiterated that he wants to fight strong international competition.
Rockstone gives him exactly that.
And if Kim can win on August 29, this might not be another one-and-done appearance from the Legendary Pokémon.
Gocheok Dome in November was already brought into the conversation.
Kim admitted that returning again after only three months would be difficult, but he also discussed the possibility of competing there if he can get through August without suffering a significant injury.
That’s potentially the bigger story here.
Black Combat doesn’t just need Min Woo Kim to come back.
It needs him to stay back.
Time for Moai to Remind Everyone
There isn’t much left for Min Woo Kim to prove about his talent.
His problem right now is visibility.
While Black Combat’s featherweight division has continued moving, Kim has increasingly become the fighter everyone talks about without actually seeing inside the cage. The “Legendary Pokémon” joke works because there’s some truth behind it.
August 29 gives him the chance to change that conversation.
And Black Combat isn’t handing him a soft opponent to make it happen.
Rockstone is ranked directly above him. He’s an established international opponent. And beating him would immediately put Kim back into the discussion near the top of the featherweight division.
