Black Combat Busan Challenge uncovered several promising amateur fighters, as CEO Pyeong Hwa Park and the promotion’s stars identified potential future professionals while continuing the search for Amugae Kim’s debut opponent.
When Black Combat announced its Busan Challenge, the objective was straightforward. CEO Pyeong Hwa Park and five of the promotion’s professional fighters traveled to Busan in search of a worthy opponent for the highly anticipated professional debut of Amugae Kim.
However, after the release of the full event video, it became apparent that the promotion may have discovered much more than a single opponent.
Over the course of the fan challenge, numerous amateur fighters stepped into the ring to test themselves against Black Combat professionals. While the experience gap was evident throughout the day, several participants impressed the promotion’s leadership enough to emerge as names worth following as Black Combat continues expanding its talent pipeline.
Five Professionals Represent Black Combat
Leading the event were five Black Combat Busan Challenge representatives:
- Amugae Kim
- Do Gyeom Lee (“Yain”)
- Gi Bum Moon (“Jigsaw”)
- Kyung Rok Kim (“Gargoyle”)
- Sung Hoon Woo (“Dynamic”)
Rather than simply meeting fans, the fighters accepted controlled boxing sparring challenges from attendees ranging from complete beginners to experienced amateur competitors. The event created a unique opportunity for local fighters to test themselves directly against professional talent while allowing Black Combat to evaluate potential future prospects.
An Unknown Amateur Earns the Respect of Sung Hoon Woo
One of the day’s biggest surprises came from an unnamed amateur who stepped in against Sung Hoon Woo.
Although Sung Hoon Woo’s precision, timing and movement ultimately proved too much, the performance left enough of an impression that the conversation quickly shifted away from the sparring itself and toward the fighter’s future.
When asked by Pyeong Hwa Park whether he intended to pursue a professional career, the amateur answered confidently that he planned to make his professional debut. He went a step further by expressing his desire to train under Sung Hoon Woo and promised to return as a featherweight competitor.
Sung Hoon Woo welcomed the idea, inviting the young fighter to visit his gym and continue his development. While no formal commitment was made, the exchange became one of the clearest examples of the Busan Challenge accomplishing its intended purpose: identifying promising local talent rather than simply entertaining the crowd.
Jong Chan Lim Continues Building Toward His Professional Debut
Recently signed Black Combat prospect Jong Chan Lim, better known by his nickname “Guk Hwa” (Chrysanthemum), also drew attention during the event.
Still awaiting his professional debut, Lim took the opportunity to spar against fellow Black Combat prospect Amugae Kim. The competitive exchange generated discussion about a possible future matchup between the two rising fighters, although no bout was announced.
For Lim, the appearance served as another opportunity to gain valuable experience while introducing himself to Black Combat’s growing fanbase ahead of his eventual debut.
Roonster Receives Encouragement to Enter the GFC Tournament
Perhaps the most significant opportunity to emerge from the event belonged to a heavyweight amateur known by the nickname “Roonster.”
Competing at approximately 115 kilograms, Roonster entered the challenge with a 5-0 amateur record under the Black Combat amateur system before testing himself against Kyung Rok Kim (Gargoyle).
Despite facing a seasoned professional, Roonster’s performance immediately caught the attention of Gargoyle, who also serves as CEO of GFC. Following the sparring session, Gargoyle encouraged him to enter the upcoming GFC Tournament.
Roonster revealed that he had already been considering doing exactly that.
Pyeong Hwa Park added another layer of significance by noting that success in the tournament could ultimately earn the amateur a Black Combat contract, illustrating one of the promotion’s pathways for unsigned prospects looking to reach the professional ranks.
Former Semi-Professional Woo Jin Lee Returns With Renewed Motivation
Another memorable participant was former semi-professional fighter Woo Jin Lee.
Now operating a strawberry farm, Lee explained that watching Japanese-Korean MMA veteran Yoshihiro Akiyama continue competing inspired him to reignite his own competitive ambitions.
Black Combat’s hosts noted that Lee had previously appeared in one of the promotion’s earlier audition-style projects before stepping away from competition. Although he was not immediately selected as Amugae Kim’s debut opponent, his willingness to return and pursue another opportunity years later resonated with both the hosts and viewers.
Lee later shared the ring with Amugae Kim, providing another experienced test for the undefeated prospect as Black Combat continues evaluating potential future opponents.
A Female Amateur Also Makes Her Presence Felt
The Busan Challenge was not limited to experienced male competitors.
One of the day’s more memorable performances came from a female MMA practitioner with approximately ten months of training experience. Choosing to spar Do Gyeom Lee, she displayed enough composure and clean striking to earn praise from the Black Combat team as well as one of the event’s prizes.
Her appearance highlighted another objective of the Busan Challenge—providing aspiring martial artists of all backgrounds with an opportunity to share the ring with established professionals.
A Lighthearted “Revenge Mission”
Not every memorable moment centered on future prospects.
One of the event’s most entertaining storylines involved a participant who introduced himself as Amugae Kim’s “right-hand man.” Hoping to avenge his friend after Do Gyeom Lee had previously defeated Kim, the challenger jokingly declared his own “coup d’état” before stepping into the ring.
Despite the playful build-up, Lee comfortably handled the challenge, with the humorous exchange becoming one of the video’s biggest crowd-pleasing moments.
More Than Just Finding One Opponent
While Black Combat’s original mission in Busan centered on finding an opponent for Amugae Kim’s professional debut, the event demonstrated something equally valuable: the depth of amateur talent waiting for an opportunity.
From unknown amateurs seeking mentorship, to returning competitors chasing another chance, to promising heavyweights being encouraged toward the GFC Tournament, the Busan Challenge served as an effective showcase for fighters hoping to earn recognition.
Whether any of these participants ultimately sign with Black Combat remains to be seen, but the event made one thing clear—the promotion’s search for new talent is far from over.
