UFC 330 Makhachev vs Ian Machado Garry Fight Preview: Can Garry Stop the Champion’s Historic Run?

UFC 330

Islam Makhachev makes his first UFC welterweight title defense against the much taller Ian Machado Garry in a fascinating clash of wrestling, size, striking and championship experience in Philadelphia

Islam Makhachev will put the UFC welterweight championship on the line against Ian Machado Garry in the main event of UFC 330 on Saturday, August 15, at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. The matchup presents one of the most interesting stylistic challenges of Makhachev’s career as the former lightweight champion faces a significantly taller opponent with a major reach advantage.

Makhachev enters the bout with a professional record of Islam Makhachev (28-1-0), including 17 UFC victories, while Garry comes into the contest at Ian Machado Garry (17-1-0) with 10 UFC wins. The physical contrast is equally notable, with Makhachev standing at 5 feet 10 inches 70.5 inch reach compared with Garry at 6 feet 3 inches 74.5 inch reach.

Makhachev enters another historic test

Islam Makhachev’s move to welterweight has already delivered one of the biggest achievements of his career. After dominating the lightweight division for years, he captured the welterweight championship and now prepares for his first defense against Garry.

The Dagestani champion has built his career around pressure, wrestling, positional control and an ability to dictate where fights take place. His victory over Jack Della Maddalena demonstrated that approach at 170 pounds, as Makhachev secured four takedowns and controlled the former champion for almost 20 minutes.

He also enters UFC 330 chasing an important piece of UFC history. His current winning streak stands at 16 fights, matching Anderson Silva’s UFC record according to the material provided. A victory over Garry would therefore give Makhachev another major milestone while strengthening his position among the sport’s most accomplished active fighters.

Garry’s size could change the fight

The biggest obvious difference between the two fighters is physical.

Garry stands five inches taller than Makhachev and owns a four inch reach advantage according to the listed measurements. That gives the Irish challenger a considerable range advantage whenever the fight remains at distance.

Garry has also spent considerable time preparing specifically for Makhachev’s grappling. Rather than relying solely on his natural size, he travelled to Georgia during his camp to train with members of the national wrestling team. He later worked with his Brazilian team on improving his ground game and has also leaned on UFC legend Demian Maia for grappling preparation.

That preparation could become the defining factor in the contest.

Makhachev will almost certainly look for opportunities to close the distance, force Garry toward the fence and create takedown opportunities. Garry’s ability to stay upright, create separation and return to his feet could determine how much time the champion gets to impose his preferred style.

Makhachev’s wrestling against Garry’s movement

The central question heading into UFC 330 is straightforward. Can Garry keep the fight standing for long enough to make his physical advantages count?

Makhachev’s approach is unlikely to change simply because Garry is taller. Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley believes the champion will stick with the strategy that has produced so much success rather than attempting to prove that he can win a striking battle.

“He’s going to take the path of least resistance,” Woodley said. “He’s going to wrestle him.”

That makes sense from a tactical perspective. Makhachev has little reason to spend 25 minutes trading at long range against a 6 foot 3 striker when his greatest advantage lies in controlling opponents against the cage and on the mat.

Garry, meanwhile, must make every second on the feet count. His jab, distance management and ability to attack from range could force Makhachev to enter from further away than he normally prefers.

Garry believes he is ready for the moment

Garry has approached the fight as more than a single opportunity. The 28 year old believes the preparation has been designed to turn him into a champion rather than simply prepare him for Makhachev.

“I have over the last nine months prepared myself not to beat Islam, but to become the champion of the world,” Garry said.

His confidence extends well beyond UFC 330. Garry has spoken about potentially enjoying a decade of dominance if he defeats Makhachev, pointing to the longevity of champions such as Justin Gaethje and Alexander Volkanovski.

However, confidence will need to translate into execution against a champion who has spent years dealing with elite competition.

The height debate adds another storyline

The unusual size difference has already created some tension between the fighters.

Garry joked that Makhachev appeared to be wearing elevated shoes during their face off in Philadelphia because the champion looked much closer to his height than expected. Makhachev dismissed the claim and said he was wearing regular footwear.

The champion also suggested that his listed height may be outdated because the UFC measured him around a decade ago when he first entered the promotion.

The footwear debate will not decide the fight, but the actual physical difference could matter enormously once the cage door closes.

UFC 330 – Makhachev vs Garry prediction

Makhachev enters UFC 330 as the favorite, with Tapology listing him at minus 340 compared with Garry at plus 270. Community predictions also heavily favor the champion, with 80 percent backing Makhachev among more than 5,000 selections in the data provided.

Garry has the tools to make the fight difficult. His height, reach, movement and improved wrestling could force Makhachev to work harder than usual to secure control. If Garry consistently gets back to his feet, the longer fighter could make the championship rounds increasingly uncomfortable.

Makhachev’s path appears clearer. Close the distance, force the grappling exchanges, secure takedowns and maintain control. His experience, positional wrestling and ability to dictate the pace give him a significant advantage if he can repeatedly bring the fight to the mat.

The key for Garry will be his first response after being taken down. If he can consistently create space and return to the feet, the fight could develop into a genuine test of Makhachev’s ability to deal with a much larger striker.

If Makhachev establishes his wrestling early, however, the champion should have the tools to control the fight and retain his welterweight title.

UFC 330 therefore represents a defining moment for both men. Makhachev is chasing another record and looking to strengthen his legacy at a second weight class, while Garry has the opportunity to become a UFC champion at 28 and establish himself as one of the sport’s leading stars.
