Mikey Musumeci Wants to Win UFC Flyweight Belt After MMA Transition

Mikey Musumeci

Mikey Musumeci is preparing for the biggest transition of his combat sports career. The 30 year old submission grappling star has confirmed that he wants to move into professional MMA, and his long term ambition is clear: compete at 125 pounds in the UFC and eventually win the flyweight championship. Musumeci revealed his goal during a recent conversation with Ariel Helwani after his latest UFC BJJ appearance.

“My goal would be to go to the UFC at 125 pounds and win that belt.”

At the same time, Musumeci was careful not to suggest that a UFC title opportunity is anywhere close. He acknowledged that he has considerable work to do before he can realistically compete at that level.

The MMA Debut Could Come Before the End of 2026

Mikey Musumeci has already identified the flyweight division as his preferred destination and previously indicated that he expects to make his professional MMA debut around November or December.

An MMA fight that was supposed to take place immediately after his September grappling match with Bryce Mitchell fell through. Musumeci said he had planned to travel directly to another state for the bout, but the matchup did not materialize.

He is now in discussions with multiple promotions about getting his first professional MMA fight booked.

That means his next step is not expected to be an immediate UFC appearance. Musumeci has acknowledged that he needs to develop his striking and gain experience before pursuing his long term UFC objective.

Musumeci Knows Striking Is the Biggest Challenge

Mikey Musumeci enters MMA with one of the strongest submission grappling backgrounds in the sport. However, he is approaching the transition with a clear understanding of what remains to be developed.

His current priority is striking. Musumeci wants to become capable of closing the distance, securing takedowns and bringing fights into the grappling exchanges where he has spent most of his career competing.

“I have a lot of work to do before then,” Musumeci said while discussing his UFC championship goal.

He also explained that he wants to improve his level enough to avoid being stopped on the feet before getting the fight to the ground. Musumeci has been training at Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas, where he is working on the broader skill set required for MMA. MMA Fighting reported following UFC BJJ 11 that he is now training full time at the gym as he moves closer to his MMA debut.

Bryce Mitchell Fight Showed Another Side of Musumeci

Before focusing completely on MMA, Musumeci continued his UFC BJJ run with a high profile matchup against UFC veteran Bryce Mitchell. The two met in the main event of UFC BJJ 11 on September 24, with Musumeci moving up in weight for the contest.

Musumeci won the 15 minute match by unanimous decision. The matchup also came with an agreement preventing him from using his signature leg lock attacks, forcing him to rely more heavily on wrestling, positional control and other submission attempts.

The performance gave Musumeci another opportunity to compete against an experienced MMA fighter while operating under grappling rules. His next challenge will be considerably different. Once he enters an MMA cage, his opponents will be able to strike while defending his takedowns and submissions.

A Difficult Path Awaits at UFC Flyweight

Musumeci’s ultimate target is currently held by Joshua Van, who retained the UFC flyweight championship with a unanimous decision victory over Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 331 on September 19. Van’s victory moved his professional record to 18 – 2.

Musumeci therefore has a substantial journey ahead before a UFC title fight becomes relevant. First comes his professional MMA debut. He then needs to establish himself as a legitimate MMA fighter, build experience and potentially work his way toward the UFC.

For Musumeci, however, the appeal is precisely the challenge. He has already reached the top of the grappling world. MMA gives him an opportunity to start again in a discipline where he considers himself a student.

“I love feeling like I’m a white belt again,” Musumeci said while discussing the transition.

Mikey Musumeci Wants to Find Out How Far He Can Go

Musumeci’s MMA ambitions are not limited to simply competing in another discipline. He wants to discover how far his grappling skills can take him after adding striking, wrestling and cage work to his game. The immediate objective is straightforward: get an MMA fight booked and begin building experience.

The long term objective is much bigger. UFC flyweight gold.

For now, there is no confirmed UFC debut date, opponent or promotion for Musumeci’s first MMA fight. What is confirmed is that the 30 year old grappling champion is actively pursuing the transition and has already identified the UFC’s 125 pound championship as his ultimate target.
