Japan BJJ Championship 2026 – Brazilian Jiu Jitsu takes center stage in Japan this weekend as the 27th All Japan Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championship arrives at the Tokyo Budokan in Tokyo on August 22 and 23.
Organized by the Japan Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation, the championship will bring competitors from different belt levels together across two days. The tournament has also reached an important stage in its preparation, with the official brackets and estimated collection times now available ahead of competition.
With the event only days away, attention is turning toward the competitors, divisions and the prizes available at one of Japan’s most important national BJJ competitions.
When and Where Is the All Japan BJJ Championship 2026?
The 27th All Japan BJJ Championship 2026 Championship will take place on August 22 and 23, 2026, at the Tokyo Budokan Main Budokan in Adachi, Tokyo.
The competition will be split across the two days according to belt level and gender.
August 22 will feature male competitors in the blue and brown belt divisions. August 23 will then feature male competitors in the purple and black belt divisions, alongside female competitors from blue belt through black belt.
The venue will open at 11:30 AM on August 22 and 9:30 AM on August 23. Competitors will follow individual collection times listed in the tournament brackets.
The JBJJF has also confirmed that the event is open to spectators. General admission costs ¥1,000, with tickets available at the venue on the day. There is no advance ticket sale.
Blue Belt Entries Reached Capacity
The level of interest in this year’s championship became clear earlier this month when the JBJJF announced that the men’s blue belt division scheduled for August 22 had reached its entry limit.
The federation closed registration for that category early because it had received enough applications to reach capacity. Other categories remained open at the time, although the federation warned that additional divisions could also close early if they reached their limits.
The final registration deadline for the championship was August 5, while the official entry list was finalized on August 14. The tournament brackets were then scheduled to be published on August 20.
Black Belt Divisions Carry Additional Reward
The black belt divisions will provide an additional incentive for some of the tournament’s top competitors.
The winners of the two adult black belt divisions with the largest number of competitors will receive an AOS award. Each winner will receive ¥300,000 toward travel expenses for an IBJJF international tournament overseas.
The award will be given to two competitors in total, with the qualifying divisions determined by the final number of competitors. The open weight division is not included when determining which categories qualify.
That additional prize gives the championship an international dimension, as the winners can use the support toward competing at an IBJJF event outside Japan.
Championship Structure Covers Multiple Belt Levels
The Japan BJJ Championship 2026 Championship is open to competitors affiliated with organizations recognized by the JBJJF.
Adult competitors born in 2008 or earlier can compete in the blue, purple, brown and black belt divisions. Juvenile competitors born in 2009 or 2010 can compete at blue and purple belt level. The championship includes both male and female divisions.
Black belt competitors also have an additional eligibility requirement. They must have completed IBJJF membership registration as a black belt.
The competition will award medals to the first, second and third place finishers in eligible divisions, while academies can also compete for team recognition based on accumulated points. The academy standings follow IBJJF rules for calculating team points.
Tournament Brackets Are Now Available
The JBJJF has released the official tournament brackets and collection information ahead of the event.
The federation has emphasized that the times listed in the brackets are estimates and can change depending on how quickly competition progresses. Competitors are therefore required to monitor the event information and check the displays at the venue for their current match number.
Competitors must also complete their weigh in and uniform check immediately before their scheduled matches. The federation requires athletes to bring identification documents to the event.
Japan’s BJJ Calendar Continues to Grow
The Japan BJJ Championship 2026 is also part of a busy period for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition in Japan.
The JBJJF calendar lists several other major tournaments in the months following the national championship. The Shikoku Jiu Jitsu Championship is scheduled for September 6, followed by the North Japan Jiu Jitsu Championship on September 12 and the Bull Terrier Jiu Jitsu Championship 2026 on September 19.
The federation’s calendar also includes the All Japan Master Jiu Jitsu Open Tournament on September 20 and the All Japan Open Weight Jiu Jitsu Championship on October 18.
That schedule highlights the depth of Japan’s domestic BJJ competition scene and gives athletes several opportunities to continue competing after this weekend’s national championship.
